DescriptionA fossil shell of a nautilus, Nautilus regalis from the London Clay. This fossil nautilus provides evidence that areas of Essex were under the sea 50 million years ago. Nautili still live in the oceans today and are known as ‘living fossils’ as the species have been relatively unchanged for hundreds of millions of years. Unlike their relatives the ammonites, nautili survived the global mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous period. Because they live deeper in the ocean they were less effected by the impact of the asteroid than those species in shallower water.
