TitlePeppered moth
-
DescriptionThe Peppered Moth is a great example of evolution in action by adapting to the environment. Before the industrial revolution it was typically white with black speckles – the basis of its name, allowing it to camouflage during the day against lichen covered trees. In the 1800s, in a time of industrial landscapes and sooty air, a black form evolved and became more common to camouflage the moths from being eaten by birds. However, in the mid-1900s, when the air started to become cleaner, the white speckled form began to predominate again. Sadly after having adapted so well to the impacts of industrialisation, the species is declining overall. Between 1968 and 2002 numbers of the species in Britain fell by almost two thirds.
