DescriptionGainsborough extended the size of the composition by adding an inch-wide strip of paper to the bottom of the painting before mounting it on canvas. It shows his technique of finishing the painting in discrete sections before moving on. The section on the bottom right is totally blank and awaiting the detail that can be seen in the trees to the left. Gainsborough's friends the Kilderbee's owned this painting. Purchased through the Felix Cobbold Bequest.
