Abram Constable 1783-1862, the artist's brother c.1806

This portrait of John’s younger brother Abram was painted around 1806 when the sitter was twenty-three. He was the youngest of the family but took over the family business upon their father’s death. Abram greatly helped Constable by managing the family income, which the artist derived from the estate. He never married and upon his retirement in 1846 sold the business. Abram went to live with the Mecklenburg's in East Bergholt and the painting was given to Jacob Mecklenburg. Purchased with funds from Felix Cobbold Bequest.
