DescriptionGouache sketch of a man and woman depicted wearing costume dated 1780. The man has black hair held back and secured at the nap of the neck. His coat is black and it has a high collar with a white cravat. White lace is revealed at the end of the sleeves. There is a glimpse of a yellow waistcoat and his breeches are dark red and end at the knee. He wears white stockings and black shoes with silver buckles. The woman wears a high brown wig and the tight bodice of her yellow printed dress has a laced front and a very full floor length skirt. The elbow length sleeves end in lace and her shoes are dark pink. Handwritten in the top left hand corner is 'English 1700 /1780', below the figure of the man is the note 'Polonaise' and below the woman is 'Calash - large hood'.
