DescriptionThe lock depicted is Flatford lock, with the footbridge and Bridge Cottage beyond it and Dedham church in the distance at the extreme left. The print was based on a painting first exhibited in 1813 and bought by the bookseller James Carpenter the following year (National Trust, Fairhaven Collection, Anglesey Abbey). Constable borrowed it for the engraving in February 1831, telling Lucas that it could 'hang up 'till we want it'. Published in the fourth number of the English Landscape series. Purchased 1928
