DescriptionRound wooden compass with Chinese characters painted on in black and red. Metal circle in the middle with a rod in the centre. Chinese characters written in a grid frame underneath. Used by diviners to determine what cosmic influences are acting on any place and hence whether it will be lucky or unlucky. South China neighbourhood of Canton, mid-nineteenth century.
