DescriptionWatercolour sketch on two pieces of paper of the Château at Versailles, taken from a sketchbook with pencil notes regarding colours. Inscribed by the artist in ink in the lower left-hand corner: J.Constable 1799; and in the sky: bistre, grey green and (?) light red. Inscribed by another hand on the back: Lord Willoughby's seat in Suffolk. The drawing is on two pieces of paper, joined and laid down on card. This is presumably copied from a topographical watercolour or engraving but the source is not identified. The mistaken identification with Lord Willoughby's seat refers to Parham House, near Framlingham. Purchased in 1929.
