DescriptionRoman jet plaque decorated with the figure of the god Attis (Atys), consort of the Phrygian mother goddess, Cybele. Found at Castle Hill Roman Villa. Attis wears a Phrygian cap, which has become confused/conflated with the domed pilleum, a symbol of libertas, worn during the ancient December festivities of Saturnalia. The object has been identified as part of the LGBT+ collections as it depicts the mythical figure of Attis. Attis was the lover of Cybele, an hermaphrodite deity whose followers were castrated males who dressed as females.
