Wall Dakin, Doug Perkins and Joe Webb, all boxers, had the idea for an ex boxers association. From this, Ipswich and District Ex-Boxers Association was started in September 1970 when are meeting was convened at the ‘Case is Altered’ public house. Many of the founding members had been a part of the Ipswich Lads Club (founded in 1922), which was a sporting club, and although they did less sport they still wanted to meet. Forty people attended this initial meeting and a steering committee formed of Doug Perkins, Ernie Dent, Ray Butler, Tommy Leverett, Reg Gooch and Les Thurlow. Over the years the Association met in many places, and currently meet in the Loco Club in Rectory Road, Ipswich (2019). The club celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2020 when they plan to close the Association but still meet informally. The Association was founded in September 1970 by a group of individuals, many of whom had belonged to Ipswich Lads Club, who wanted to meet to see boxing bouts and talk about boxing but were taking part less actively in the sport.
