DescriptionThis portrait was thought to be John Constable but is a portrait of Charles, 2nd Earl Grey (1764-1845), 1811 by Joseph Wright. Philip Mould's Historical Portraits image library shows an image of the same portrait.Framed, glazed and mounted pencil and coloured wash drawing entitled 'John Constable, RA' by John Wright. Signed bottom right 'John Wright 1811'. In accession register a pencil note states 'This drawing could not be found in 1964, and Mr Maynard said he remembered that when material was being sent to Wales at the beginning of the War (early 1940s) a Constable was missing. This is presumed to be it as all others are now accounted for'.
