DescriptionIn this early work, Gainsborough has painted a view of a Suffolk estuary landscape in the Dutch tradition. Although Gainsborough sketched widely around the Ipswich countryside this painting is not taken from any particular spot. Gainsborough worked in his studio on his landscapes using small clay models for the animals and people, with coal, cork and even broccoli for rocks and trees. With the aid of candles, he would create the compositions and the high dramatic lighting effects used by Dutch artists in the past. Purchased with the assistance of the Felix Cobbold Bequest and the Art Fund.
