DescriptionBeater (patu muka) for flax with rounded bottom, made of carved and polished basalt. Circular cross section, slightly marked shoulder below narrower grip, with ridge around domed top. Stuck-on label: 'Pestle - New Zealand - used by natives for pounding tobacco'. Marked in black ink: '1948-235-12' and in pencil 'Carthew 1938-235'. Carthew sale, auction, Colonel R.J. Carthew, one-time owner of Woodbridge Abbey.
