TitleMiss Katherine Edgar (1740-1810)

DescriptionThe Edgars were an important Ipswich family who resided at the Red House on the Tuddenham side of the town. Gainsborough painted the whole generation: Robert Edgar (1741-78) and his sisters. Elizabeth (1733-91) and Katherine (1740-1810). Conscious of Gainsborough's intimacy with the Edgar family, a number of portraits, including this three-quarter length, have been wrongly identified as members of the family; it is improbable that this damaged portrait shows a Miss Edgar. Stylistically the portrait is very close in date to the portrait of Mrs Bedingfield in the Ipswich collection. Re-glazed with non-reflective and UV filter glass funded by the Friends of the Ipswich Museums and work carried out by MF Gallery and Framing November 2023.
