DescriptionHairstyle of c. 1681 Captain Cotton was the eldest surviving son of John Cotton and his fourth wife, Ann Cotton. His father left large debts when he died in 1655 and Captain Cotton was forced to sell the Earl Soham estate to Leicester Devereux of Christchurch Mansion. He bought the Bentried estate at Easton and was a Captain in the local militia as well as churchwarden. He has a full curled wig in keeping with his military rank.
