TitleA lime kiln with Lime Kiln cottages beyond the River Stour, between Dedham and Stratford St. Mary, c.1815-16
-
DescriptionThis evocative oil sketch of the River Stour between Dedham and Stratford St Mary (made c.1815/6) depicts a brick lime kiln. An industrial subject is unusual and shows Constable’s early interest in all activity along the River. The kiln appears to have been associated with buildings that once stood on the site of what is now the ‘Le Talbooth’ restaurant. Acquired with the assistance of the Art Fund (with a contribution from The Wolfson Foundation); Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant; National Lottery Heritage Fund; the Friends of the Ipswich Museums; The Constable Trust and The Scarfe Trust.
