DescriptionThirteen times Bailiff of Ipswich John Sparrowe was born in 1689/1690. He lived at the building now known as ‘The Ancient House’ in the Buttermarket, Ipswich, which was then known as ‘Sparrowe's House’. The house was acquired by the Sparrowe family in 1591. John Sparrowe was elected as Bailiff of Ipswich on thirteen occasions. This portrait may have been to celebrate his thirteenth election in 1753, it cannot have been painted much later. Gainsborough moved to Ipswich in 1752, which could make this portrait an important early commission. Purchased with assistance of V&A Purchase Grant Fund and Felix Cobbold Bequest.
