Barkcloth, small rectangular piece, sample on card. Painted black with a pattern of lines and zigzags. Such a pattern may have been associated with rank (Koojiman 1972, p.53). Very early label on the reverse reads: 'Piece of a Chiefs belt - Mangaia.' Said to have been collected before 1847 and is therefore very rare.
