DescriptionBarkcloth (siapo). Large rectagular sheet of two layers, one side decorated with a triangular fringe. The ground divided into rectangles, the dividing lines being themsleves divieded by a black and white chequerboard pattern, each square contains a different design based on radiating lines or triangles in black, brown and yellow with some crosshatching in fine black. Because of fringe and double layer, possibly a wraparound skirt for a woman of rank. At one end, an inscription in Mission script devised for Polynesia. Registration number on label stuck on reverse. Cut from a much bigger piece, zigzag edging on one side. Yellow dye from tumeric.
