Because of fringe and double layer, possibly a wraparound skirt for a woman of rank. At one end, an inscription in Mission script devised for Polynesia. Registration number on label stuck on reverse. Cut from a much bigger piece, zigzag edging on one side. Yellow dye from tumeric.
