DescriptionA form of nostalgia, for the old ways of country life that were disappearing under the pressures of agricultural improvements and the exodus to the newly built factories of industrial Britain. Gainsborough expressed his feelings in these fancy paintings. They feature rustic cottage scenes, with groups of children and animals and are full of sentimental attitude. These paintings fetched high prices however, while Gainsborough’s realistic landscapes remained unsold. Purchased with National Heritage Lottery Fund; the Art Fund; the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund; the Friends of the Ipswich Museums and public appeal.
