DescriptionAfter his move to London in 1774, Gainsborough's landscape paintings become a nostalgic memory of the urban dweller pining for the countryside. By this time his compositions were based on rustic cottage scenes with groups of children and animals and his brushwork had become loose and feathery. These works are known as Gainsborough's 'fancy pictures'. They became very become fashionable when Gainsborough exhibited them. This landscape and Crossing the Ford, were painted as a pair around 1786 for the 6th Earl of Dysart of Helmingham Hall, Suffolk. Purchased with National Heritage Lottery Fund; the Art Fund; the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund; the Friends of the Ipswich Museums and public appeal.
