DescriptionTwo species of squirrel can be found in the UK. Red squirrels are rarer and are our native species. Grey squirrels were introduced into the country from North America in the 1800s. The ‘greys’ have resulted in the considerable decline of our ‘reds’ through competition for food and transmission of the squirrelpox virus. Conservation efforts to save Red Squirrels have been underway for decades, which consists of monitoring squirrel populations and targeted control of grey squirrels.
