TitleMrs Hill Mussenden

DescriptionHairstyle c.1720 Mrs Hill Mussenden has a hairstyle called the "Fontange". It was created by the Duchess of Fontanges, who, during a hunt with King Louis XIV of France, tangled up her hair in a tree branch and had to rearrange it by piling the hair on top of her head. The king was fascinated with the look and he begged her to keep it forever. This style was in fashion until 1720. The portrait of Mrs Hill is a pair with Capt Hill. (Hill Mussenden (1699-1772), of Herringfleet born of John Mussenden of Hillsborough and Jane Leathes) , which would suggest she is Martha, daughter of Sir Henry Johnson, M.P., of Friston Hall.
