TitleReverend Robert Hingeston (1699-1776) c.1750s
-
DescriptionRobert was the son of Peter Hingeston, the Ipswich Borough organist. From Ipswich School he went to Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1716. He returned to Ipswich School and was eventually appointed headmaster in 1743, a position he held until his death. In 1752 Gainsborough moved into Foundation Street and became a neighbour of Hingeston who was residing in the Headmaster's House in Lower Brook Street (their gardens would have met). Hingeston became an important patron for Gainsborough, commissioning several portraits. Hingeston and the Reverend Richard Canning were close colleagues linked in the political and social activities in the town. Both portraits are very similar and may have been commissioned as a pair to hang in each other's houses. Acquired with the assistance of the Art Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Friends of the Ipswich Museums.
