bonnet, bonnet

Natural colour Tuscan straw bonnet of Leghorn style construction, with a net frill trim. Circa 1830. Bonnet made from fine, natural colour Tuscan straw with thirteen end plait (possibly), stitched together edge to edge (technique known as knitted) - Leghorn style construction. The plaits are knitted together to form a hood. The crown is shaped over a block and the hood cut and restitched to form the brim and bavolet. The brim and neck edge supported with silk covered millinery wire. The brim is decorated with machine made net of cotton or linen.
