ОписаниеCoatee formerly belonging to John Phillips Judd of Maces Place Rickling, Capt of West Essex Militia. Circa 1830s. The coatee, of scarlet cloth, double-breasted, fastened by two rows of ten silver buttons in pairs, is heavily padded with quilted silk from the collar to the line of the fifth button, and with white linining material to the bottom. False pockets on the skirts have each two pairs of silver lace guards on scarlet ground, with four buttons. Turnbacks, white 17 1/2 inches from the waistline, which is marked by a red gimp twist with a button at each end, and a second twist without buttons a little below. Collar, pale yellow, 3 1/4 inches high, lined with black silk, fastened with three hooks and eyes, the two guards on either side of silver lace, 4 1/2 by 1 1/4 inches, each with a button. Epaulettes are missing, but four holes on each shoulder mark their position. Cuffs, pale yellow, 2 1/2 inches deep, with four silver lace guards in pairs on scarlet ground, each with a button, one pair extending over the scarlet coatee sleeve. Buttons, silver, slightly convex with a garter bearing the words WEST ESSEX encircling the star of the Order of the Garter: large size 7/8 inch in diameter, the smaller ones on collar and cuffs about 5/8 inch in diameter.
