ОписаниеTwo piece evening dress of bodice and skirt in a pale pink silk satin. Dress has been heavily altered and possibly bodice and skirt are not an original match. Circa 1840s. Bodice: pale pink silk satin and constructed of 8 pieces, the bodice has a wide low neckline (almost off the shoulder) edged with piping. The front of the bodice is constructed with two triangular pieces which finish in a point at the centre-front and the bottom edge is finished with piping. It opens down the centre back and fastens with 7 metal hooks, 6 thread loops eyes and one metal eye at the waist. Drop shoulder with short sleeves decorated with three frills with a bound edge, all in the same fabric as the bodice. Lined in fine white cotton with whalebone at the centre-front, one on the left front seam and a channel on the right front seam but no bone. Linen waist tapes. Hand sewn. Skirt: pale pink silk satin (of two types) full skirt constructed in many pieces and heavily altered. Waistband of white linen which fastens with 3 metal hooks and eyes with the main body of the skirt tacked to it with pink thread. The fullness is brought into the waistband with cartridge pleats evenly sized around the waistband. There is an opening in the skirt with two metal loops on one side but no corresponding hooks. The main body of the skirt is made up of a patchwork of pieces in two different types of pale pink satin including two pieces with piped edges. There is a pocket of white glazed cotton sewn into one of the seams but with no pocket opening in the silk of the skirt. Lining of stiffened white linen muslin which is loose from the silk and has been sewn by hand and machine (chain stitch so possibly an early sewing machine).
