skirt, overskirt

White cotton muslin overskirt with embroidered frilled front and trained back. c.1870. White muslin overskirt with straight front section with two layers of frills. Frill embroidered with a floral pattern in chain stitch and attached via a piece of machine lace. Back section is tightly gathered onto the waistband to fit over a bustle, and extends into a train. Train is edged with one frill of the same style. Fastens with two hooks and eyes - one at left side opening and one on extended band at front waist. Waist band is a strip of cotton tape.
