dress, evening dress

Dress(?) comprising of two bodices and a skirt. Cream muslin skirt with green velvet trim. Silk (under) bodice with lace and green velvet trim. Cream muslin bodice with ruched short sleeves. 1850 c. Accessioned as one dress, they may not originally have gone together?? Bodice 1 - Cream silk underbodice. Wide scoop neckline trimmed with lace threaded with green velvet silk ribbon. Short sleeves trimmed with a different type of lace, threaded with same green ribbon. Two bones on either side of front darts. Centre front fastening of eight metal hooks, three metal eyes and six thread loops. The waistband is of corded silk ribbon. Lined with cotton, with waist tape on inside. Evidence of alteration - the centre front darts have been let out and the centre front may have been added later. The green velvet ribbon on the silk bodice is different to the green velvet ribbon on the skirt - it is newer looking and slightly darker. Bodice 2 - Cream evening bodice, cotton muslin over a silk layer, with cotton lining. Plain wide scoop neckline. Short sleeves decorated with ruffled cotton muslin and piped shoulder seams. Bodice with point at front of waist supported by three bones. Centre back fastening of 17 metal hooks and 16 thread loops and one metal eye (at waist). Front of bodice is decorated with triangular shaped ruffled net, tacked on - possibly later addition. Skirt of white coarse cotton muslin. Full crinoline size. Gathered onto cotton waistband, in broad pleats at the sides and tight gathers at the back, except for front waist which is flat. Small pocket in the waistband on the left hip. large pocket slit on right seam. Side opening, fastening with two metal hooks and eyes. Bottom of skirt decorated with two narrow frills of same fabric, each trimmed with narrow green velvet silk ribbon, and one large frill above the hem. This would have been worn over an underskirt.
