White linen shift or chemise, with high square neck and short sleeves. Marked by ink '24 Sophia Veale 16 1869' in front neckline. Neckline is shallow and boat-shaped & very short sleeves & neckline and sleeves edged with needle lace of button hole stitches & placket on centre front neckline, fastening with one small mother of pearl button & body of garment is gathered onto the yoke front and back & yoke, neck and arms all decorated with feather stitches in white & yoke is edged with piping & small extra panel under each arm & main body of garment is undecorated & all hand stitched.
