bathing costume, bathing suit

Sailor-suit style bathing costume with knickerbockers and separate skirt. Navy blue cotton with white detailing. 1887-1890. Suit: Sailor-suit style bathing costume of blouse top and attached knickerbockers. Large collar decorated with six lines of white braid and white tie at front. Low neckline is disguised with an attached bib that buttons on underneath. Centre front fastening with three navy blue buttons. Short puff sleeves with three lines of white braid. Fitted waistband with buttons to attach skirt. Loose legs, knee length, with elasticated bottoms. Skirt: Placket opening. Five rows of white braid at hem and three at the waist. Skirt pleats onto waistband, which shows signs of alteration.
