ОписаниеCommemorative handkerchief from Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. Red and green silk taffeta - red background with green images of Queen Victoria and gold border. 1897. Red and green woven silk, red background with decoration. With two types of circular decoration, all topped by a crown and surrounded with a wreath. One type of decoration has a side view of the young Queen Victoria, with 'LONG LIVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN 1837' written around the border. The other type has the bust of an older Queen Victoria, with 'DIAMOND JUBILEE 1897' written around the border. These two decorations alternate in lines across the handkerchief. The object has been identified as part of the LGBT+ collections as it relates to the hankie code. The hankie code was believed to have started in the American West where a shortage of women led to men having to take the female role in dancing. Those taking the male role would wear a blue bandana (either wrapped around the arm or hanging from the waist) and those taking the female role would wear a red one. This was later adopted by gay men in San Francisco and the colours were expanded to include a wider range of sexual preferences.
