patch box, box

An oval enamelled blue patch box. The lid is decorated with a painted scene of two doves with a pink rose, blue flowers and greenery. This is surrounded by the inscription 'A Token of Regard'. The inside of the box is of white enamel and there is a mirror on the inside lid. These patch boxes were often given as gifts and contained decorative patches used to cover scars caused by diseases such as smallpox and syphilis.
