ОписаниеIron axehead with broad cutting edge with projecting spurs on each side of the opening for handle; Viking type. This Viking axe head was found in the river Colne in Colchester. It is made of iron and was probably placed in the river on purpose. The owner may have placed it into the river as an offering to the gods, either to ask them for good luck in an upcoming battle or to give thanks for having survived recent conflict. Historical records suggest the Vikings were only in Essex for 100 years, making this an exceptional find.
