trumpet, horn, trumpet mouthpiece

This is the mouthpiece from a Roman musical instrument called a cornu. It was found at Gladwin Road in Colchester – possibly in the 1930s. These large copper-alloy horns were carried by the horn-blower, or cornicen, who would code battle orders into signals which he would then broadcast to the troops. This type of horn is associated with the Roman cavalry, the soldiers mounted on horseback.
