ОписаниеThis silver medallion, dated about 17 BC, shows a bust of the Roman Emperor Augustus. It was excavated from the Lexden Tumulus, one of the best known and richest burial mounds in Britain. It dates to the end of the first century BC, in the Late Iron Age. When the burial mound was excavated in the 1920s, the cremated remains of a man were found buried along with grave goods including chain mail, figurines, an axe head wrapped in cloth and this silver medallion of Augustus. These objects, and the way in which he was buried, suggest that this was the grave of an Iron Age king.
