beaker, hunt beaker

This small Roman buff ware beaker is decorated with a running stag. This type of decoration is called barbotine and is created by 'piping' the decoration onto the vessel to create a raised pattern. The Romans hunted stags for sport and even staged hunts in circuses and amphitheatres for public entertainment.
