ОписаниеCeremonial paddle made of blackened wood and haliotis (paua) shell. The blade is pointed at the top, convex on one side and flat on the other. Decorated entirely on either side, with paua shell inlay on the convex side. Motifs include a bird head at the top, a face halfway down with a forked tongue, a side profile of two faces facing eachother, and underneath them is an upsidedown one-eyed figure with a protruding tongue. The paddle has been cut so only the blade remains. Decoration is unfinished in a few places. From the collection of Alderman J.H. [John Henry] Grimwade of Bacton House, Ipswich, presented by Councillor Sydney Charles Grimwade.
