ОписаниеA fragment of bone from a femur, the back leg bone, of a straight-tusked elephant. It dates from the Ipswichian, the last interglacial period in Britain that lasted from 130,000-115,000 years ago. This fossil is included in the Mythical Creatures exhibition as in 300-200 BC, people digging trenches in North Africa found large skeletons which were believed to be the remains of giant people. This area has proved to be rich in mastodon and mammoth fossils. It is now thought that these huge fossil bones may have inspired myths of Giants.
