brooch, disc brooch

Bronze Anglo-Saxon disc brooch. The disc is divided into stepped cells which together form a swastika and each cell contains an interlace pattern, perhaps a simplified animal design. At the centre was a circular enclosure, possibly a stone or paste boss, which is now lost. The raised surfaces of the disc are silvered and the recessed areas are gilded. Clear mounts on the reverse for a brooch pin.
